ELFE - Eco-Luxe Fashion Expose, was an event on the Melbourne Spring Fashion Weeks calendar that was to help support eco-friendly fashion designers. The night was held at the wonderful Alumbra venue at the end of Central Pier at the Docklands. Their aim to inform people that environmentally sustainable fashion isn't necessarily about "unshaven armpits and potato sacks" was certainly reached. While their concept of the night also held a charity focus too; with a tree being donated to Landcare Australia for every ticket sold was also a terrific idea.
As one walked the "green grass carpet" to enter the venue you could hardly mistake it for being anything but an environmentally friendly centred event. There were two catwalk shows during the night that were in the main room of the venue, while racks of clothes in maketstall formation also lined the room and were upstairs too.
I must admit that I had been unsure of exactly what it was that I was going to see coming down the catwalk. But to my surprise and delight the designers really had proven that just because they were using sustainable materials or snippets from vintage stores the clothing produced was just as beautiful as anything else one might consider buying! It really was a great show!
The designers being showcased were: Vintage Soul, Lady Petrova, Made In Donald, Rachael Cassar, Eva Q Design, Obikinomi, Boche Collection, Kiss Chacey, Etiko and shoes by Vivien Westwood's Melissa. From them we viewed some rather luxurious cocktail dresses, fun and flirty sun dresses that were both long and short, plus some cute shorts and tops. But it was the male models in the shorts, Tee's and tanks that had all the girls screaming with glee!!! There were lots of metallics, sequins, lace, feathers and materials used from days gone by and current sustainable fabrics.
The night also had entertainment throughout with various guest DJ's and musical artists making it easy for people to get into the groove which was great!
I think for me the event was slightly over sold ticket wise for the venue. However, I don't mean that as a criticism as I was really encouraged by virtue of the fact that so many people were obviously taking an interest in making good fashion choices for the future!!! I think that Emily Highfield - the Event Director and designer for Vintage Soul, and her team ought to be congratulated on doing such a great job. They gave a voice and platform to designers who may not have necessarily had the opportunity during such a week of fashion. What'smore it was a great way to get the message out to consumers to think before you buy and to really make good choices!!! I know I will!

well done jane!
